Information is constantly feeding us in every direction, from our daily news feed to the social media influencers grabbing our attention for likes on the internet. Constantly consuming external information, such as digital/social media, leads an individual to have significant stress, anxiety, and depression. This is particularly true for those who grew up in the digital age. In today's climate of conspiracy theories, polarization, racial and gender divisions, and constant images of global war conflict on every media platform, our mental health is at risk of being harmed. Yet, we still need to stay tuned to avoid missing anything.
In the Christian faith, we learn that we are vessels of God, and what we consume matters, from the food we eat to the information fed to us. The question I have for you, the reader, is, Does the information you consume daily improve your life and allow you to be a better member of society? Or Does it cause you mental distress and shape your views negatively?
If the second question resonates with you, know you are not alone. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many people worldwide felt overwhelmed by the negativity, hate, and conspiracy theories that were rampant. These feelings of panic, fear, and helplessness were all too common. During the pandemic, 64% of Americans felt that social media had a negative impact on the U.S., according to The Pew Research Center.
Sadly, the pandemic's adverse effects have left many people traumatized, lacking compassion for their fellow man, and fearful of others, holding the belief that everyone has lost their minds. People nowadays tend to avoid greeting each other or making eye contact in passing as if someone is going to harm them.
There are things that we can individually do to decrease our anxieties in today's fast-paced world surrounded by social media to allow us to improve our mental health.
Disconnect from negative Social media: what you consume becomes part of you. When you engage in healthy media that is inspiring and uplifting, it boosts your mood and adds to your character.
Disconnect from your devices: being alone with your thoughts allows you time to reflect, connect with God, and create meaningful interactions with others.
Put on your full armor of God: have faith in the Power of God to protect you spiritually and physically in your daily outgoings. Ephesians 6:10-18
Be the Light in the World: Despite our differences, every human deserves to be treated with love, respect, and dignity. Erasing the fears created by negative social media can be achieved by practicing positivity in our everyday interactions with others.
Practice Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help us become more present and aware of our physical and emotional experiences. By observing our thoughts and sensations without judgment, we can learn to respond to them more constructively and positively.
In these challenging times, prioritizing our mental and spiritual well-being is more important than ever. By slowing down and reducing the negative external noise surrounding us daily, we can change how we view ourselves and how we approach the world.
