Environmental Impact on Health

The impacts of toxins in our drinking water, the air we breathe, and the food we eat have left many people in marginalized communities in a vulnerable state of health. When Americans purchase a new home or move to a different area, they usually envision living in a safe environment that promotes their family's well-being. However, it's unlikely they would ever think they or their loved ones would be exposed to harmful contaminants in the air or water from an industrial facility located miles away.

Chemical manufacturing plants for oil and gas companies contribute to air pollution through the transmission, transportation, and storage of oil and gas. Hazardous air pollutants from these sources can increase the risk of developing neurological and cancer risks and worsen chronic illnesses.

There are certain areas in the United States, such as "Cancer Alley" in Louisiana, where African Americans are struggling to achieve environmental justice and improve their environmental health. This issue is of national concern, as their voices are not being heard due to the undue influence and wealth of the Oil and Gas corporations.

It is essential to be aware of the many environmental hazards in communities across the U.S., such as hazardous chemicals like chromium-6. Erin Brockovich, an environmental health advocate, exposed PG&E when many people in a small town were diagnosed with cancer due to wastewater contamination that had chromium-6 that spilled into the town's drinking water.

One way to promote environmental health and wellness is to stay informed about the companies and industries operating in your community. By understanding their environmental impact, you can take proactive steps to minimize adverse effects and work towards a healthier, more sustainable community.

Ensure the environmental compliance officer/specialist and city leaders regularly informs communities of air and water quality and holds companies accountable for environmental safety.

We hold the power to impact our environment positively. Let's take action by advocating for our health. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to a healthier community.
